The Dynamo, SPARK

The question of what to call yourself, as a singer, when another person in showbiz happens to share your name can be tricky. But if your middle name is Sparkle, it’s a lot easier, and that’s how Jess Morgan became Spark. The name suits her too - her look, her sound (listen to “Blow” and “Shut Out The Moon”), her wit, her energy. The energy is important, she says. It’s what got her where she is today. “I wrote my first song when I was 12. That was a good year. And I’ve never been afraid of hard work. Hard work and talent - you really need both. There’s no point having one without the other.” Does the songwriting come easily to her? “It’s very mysterious. It’s not a thought-out thing. I’ll get a theme or an idea, and often a melody at the same time. You can’t really force it, wouldn’t want to force it. Then I’ll write fast, I’ll write one line and the next line is already there.” But what about repeating the miracle on stage, making it all seem fresh again, like you’re singing it for the first time? “No, it’s not hard to sing it like you mean it. The songs don’t have to be deep. If you mean them, you can always go and deliver them on stage.”
